Heather has been involved with horses for over 25 years and has been teaching riding for 15 of those years. Heather has always had horses of her own and has been teaching children to ride since she was a teen. Lessons at various hunter/jumper barns in the Philadelphia area, rides through Fairmount and Pennypack Park, the Texas hill country and beaches, the mountains of Arizona, and of course the show ring have all helped her to develop a wide knowledge base from which to draw.
Heather also attended William Woods University in Fulton, Missouri, where she completed a Bachelor of Science in Equestrian Studies with a minor in English. At school, Heather rode under Linda McClaren, who trained with Frank Madden, Johanna Gwinn, an internationally rated FEI judge, Gayle Lampe, the renowned Saddle Seat rider, instructor, and judge, and with Marianne Bartley-Lehman, a western trainer who rode at the Quarter Horse World show level. She also has participated in many clinics with top riders such as Olympian Anne Kursinski, Frank Madden, Patti Stovel, Richard Shrake, and Kevin Babington.
While attending the Woods, Heather worked as a riding instructor at different summer camps, one of which was Camp Conrad Weiser in nearby Reading. It was there she took her CHA (Certified Horsemanship Association) riding instructor test, and was one of the only participants to ever recieve the highest rating of Master Instructor in both English and Western, on her very first try. After graduation Heather worked as assistant trainer at Callaway Hills, a world famous Saddlebred farm, home of the stallion, Will Shriver. In 2001 she moved back to her hometown in Philadelphia to teach hunter/jumper lessons at Ashford Farm in Miquon. It was there that she discovered the thrill of cross country jumping. In 2004, she traveled to Texas, to co-manage Austin Tri-Star Farms. She helped develop the business from a few horses and a handful of students, to a large facility with 50 horses and over 100 students. Finally, she has come full circle, back to Pennsylvania, to fulfill her lifelong dream of owning her own business and managing her own facility.
With her unique program, students will start with the basics of horse-care, safety and riding techniques. From there our riders branch into whatever field she/he desires including jumping, dressage, western pleasure, driving, or just recreational riding. Horsemanship and teamwork are a big part of our lessons. We specialize in the balanced seat, classical style of riding and lessons are taught in a ring, in the field and on trail rides. Our students also learn the discipline and responsibilities of riding and caring for the horse and their equipment. Our program is designed not only to make great riders but to build self confidence and self esteem in our students. We also have lots of fun!
Nicole teaches the driving lessons here at the farm. She was Heather's first student, riding a Saddlebred mare named Fire to many ribbons with the Huntingdon Valley Riding and Driving Association. A summer job with the 76 Carriage Company in Center City Philadelphia turned into a lifelong passion for driving. Nicole eventually became the assistant trainer for the company, driving the new young stock in their first harrowing experiences with traffic, bicycles, construction cones, and throngs of people.
Rambo is a 10 year old Great Pyrenees/Anatolian/Komondor mix. Previously a goat-herding dog from Corsicana, Texas, his job now involves protecting the farm from various wildlife and strange noises. Likes include ear scratching, chasing squirrels, sleeping on the bed, and scooby snacks. Dislikes include airplanes, trains, guns, thunder, and cats who try to steal his food.
Thelma & Louise were our original two barn kitties from the prestigious Nonnemaker Farm in Allentown, Pa. Heather didn't get the girls fixed quickly enough and they both found comfort in the arms - uhh, paws, I guess - of the wild tomcat living in the woods, Rabies Ralph. So, they each had a litter of kittens who found homes with many of the lesson students!
Thelma & Louise are in charge of the rodent control here at the farm. They are also the managers of de-spooking and desensitizing the horses to furry whizzing objects flying about at inappropriate times. Usually Lulu doesn't look this sad, I'm not sure what that's all about.
